Fifty years ago homosexuals in Greenwich Village in New York rioted near Stonewall Inn to stand up against homophobia and recognition as humans with civil rights. This is the flashpoint for a decades-long fight for equality that goes on today, and is represented by the Pride festivities around the world this month.
Young gays view Pride as a party, a hook-up orgy, or a way to draw attention to themselves. THIS IS NOT THE PURPOSE OF PRIDE.
These brave gays 50 years ago started a movement that has brought unheard of freedoms for these younger generations. Respect needs to be shown. Meditate on all of the losses that led to this freedom.
And remember this: we currently have an administration in America (and similar right-wing movements across Europe) openly hostile to gay rights.
